Your child needs to know this rope is there as they begin to use social media and you want to keep it durable and strong, even if the distance between you gets longer. No one can predict what might happen to a young person online; anyone can be bullied or feel tempted to go and do something risky. Your child needs to be aware that the rope is there for them to climb down. They need to know that they can get out of danger, get out of feeling unsafe and go back to a safe place (emotionally) if things start to get tough by talking to you about the problem or at least letting you know there is something wrong or they don’t feel ok, even if that’s all they are able to say.
Knowing the rope is there is that feeling your child can carry on the inside, a feeling of emotional safety, knowing their parent is there for them always. Children who have secure attachments are more likely to stay emotionally close to their parents, even during adolescence, and this closeness can really help if times get tough.
